Approximately 350 people turned out for the CCSA Families LAUSD Board District Candidate Forum, held on Wednesday evening at Los Angeles' Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The forum featured four candidates vying for the Los Angeles Unified School District, Board District 1 seat.
Speaking to Los Angeles-area charter school leaders, parents, teachers and others, the candidates addressed a number of issues affecting the charter school community, including support for LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy, support for the expansion of charter schools, and facilities and funding equity for charter schools.
The special election will coincide with the June 3 Statewide Primary Election, which is rapidly approaching. A lot is at stake in this election for our charter schools at both the state and local levels. A run-off will ensue if no one candidate captures 50%+1 of the vote. Don't forget to register to vote by May 19. And visit the website of our sister organization, CCSA Advocates, to learn more about election issues and candidates' positions.
Candidates who attended included:
- Genethia Hudley-Hayes
- Alex Johnson
- Rachel Johnson
- George McKenna
Omarosa Manigault was unable to attend due to illness, and Sherlett Hendy-Newbill and Hattie McFrazier were invited but did not attend.
