The California Charter Schools Association Advocates (CCSA Advocates) today announced that they will not be endorsing a candidate in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board District 5 Special Election Primary. The following statement is from CCSA Advocates Spokesperson Brittany Chord Parmley:
“The next person elected to LAUSD’s Board District 5 seat will be responsible for representing the interests of a highly diverse community in terms of race, ethnicity, income, and family education needs. Community voices in this District have been under-represented in past elections as demonstrated by low voter turnout. We are encouraged that there are a number of highly qualified, inspiring candidates in this race. Given the diversity, strength, and depth of the field, we have decided not to endorse a candidate in the special election primary. This election is an opportunity for the entire community to engage in a dialogue about what it will take to provide an outstanding public education to all Los Angeles students.”
In November, CCSA Advocates Families hosted a Board District 5 forum and extended invitations to all candidates who were interested in running for the seat at the time. The forum, held at Magnolia Science Academy 8, drew a crowd of more than 300 parents, students and community members. The forum gave the community the opportunity to ask tough questions and to clarify the candidate’s positions on critical education issues.
We believe that Board District 5 voters will choose a leader who will engage the local community on the critical issues facing LAUSD and push for increased student learning and success. CCSA Advocates will continue the fight to make sure every student has access to a high-quality public education.
The special election primary will take place on Tuesday, March 5 for voters residing in LAUSD’s Board District 5, which includes neighborhoods in Northeast and Southeast Los Angeles. If needed, a runoff election will be held on May 14.
