California Charter Schools Association Advocates Endorses Xavier Becerra for California Governor

Political advocacy organization representing California’s charter public schools backs Becerra as a student-centered leader committed to educational opportunity

SACRAMENTO, CA — California Charter Schools Association Advocates (CCSA Advocates) today announced its endorsement of Xavier Becerra for Governor of California, citing his commitment to public education, educational opportunity, and ensuring California’s diverse students and families have access to high-quality public schools that meet their needs.

Becerra, a former California Attorney General and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, has spent decades in public service advocating for the rights of Californians and challenging policies he believed threatened their opportunities and protections. As a candidate for governor, he has emphasized investing in California’s public schools – regardless of the model – focusing on student outcomes, and giving local school communities the flexibility to respond to the needs of the students they serve.

“Xavier Becerra understands that a quality public education can change the trajectory of a child’s life and open doors for generations to come,” said Gregory McGinity, Executive Director of CCSA Advocates. “His own story reflects that promise. Fighting for the civil rights have been a defining principle throughout Becerra’s career, and we believe he will extend that same commitment to ensuring every child has access to a great public education.”

Today, more than 725,000 students attend nearly 1,300 charter public schools across Californiamore than one in eight of the state’s K-12 public school students. They serve communities across the state, provide families with tuition-free public school options, and give educators the flexibility to develop innovative approaches that respond to the needs of their students, families, and communities.”

“California’s students are incredibly diverse, and meeting their needs requires innovative public schools that are equally responsive,” McGinity said. “Educational opportunity is a civil rights issue. We need a governor who will listen to families and educators, focus on what works for students, and recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to public education. We believe Xavier Becerra will be that governor.”
